Nursing home study by UT, Austin Public Health focuses on workforce

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the worry about spreading infection fell on long-term care centers (what some people think of as nursing homes) and how they would prevent infection and or contain the disease when someone was infected.

The Design Institute for Health, which is a joint program from Dell Medical School and the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin, studied the best way centers could alter their design for their staffers to be able to follow sanitation guidelines. The institute’s team looked at creating clear signage about personal protective equipment, for example, and how to design stations for putting on that equipment and for hand sanitizing.

That initial study was paid for by a $410,822 grant from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.
